A Few Good Rules of Thumb
• Before starting a bathroom or kitchen remodel, consult with a professional contractor. DIY television shows have fooled countless people into thinking that such renovations are a breeze! You’ll want to consult with a professional in these two rooms more than any other because mistakes can be incredibly costly and you will end up spending more in the end without someone who understands design and construction standards, codes, and regulations.
• While most people opt for chrome for kitchen and bathroom hardware and plumbing fixtures because it is neutral and easy to clean, I prefer polished nickel for its warm undertones and elegant finish. It works beautifully with both cool and warm colors, unlike chrome, which reads very blue.
• I love the look of aged brass, but it is best used sparingly when it comes to plumbing fixtures. Put it in a room where it can really make a statement, such as your powder room, and stick with polished nickel in the kitchen and master bathroom.
• Lighting is a great way to introduce a new finish to a space and mix metals. It looks super chic to have polished nickel or bronze cabinet hardware and plumbing fixtures with brass lighting or vice versa. Mixing metals adds a layer of richness and personality to a space!
• Remember to keep your storage needs in mind as you plan the design of your bathroom. You will want to have plenty of room to keep everything hidden away so that your bathroom is organized and tidy.
• Plan to have 36” to 40” between vanity sconces for optimum light dispersion.
• Towel bars should be hung 48” from the ground while robe hooks should be hung at a height of 60” above the ground.
• When selecting materials, think about how much maintenance you are comfortable with and whether it is worth it to you in order to use a beautiful material you love.
• If your budget won’t allow for you to completely renovate your bathroom, you can still give it a major facelift with freshly painted walls and cabinetry, new plumbing fixtures, lighting, and linens.
• Don’t forget to decorate your bathroom! A few personal touches like art, a pretty rug, and baskets for storage add texture, interest, color, and personality to one of the most utilitarian spaces in the house.
